Louisiana's LA GATOR Scholarship, Explained
Louisiana's education account pays its biggest awards, up to $15,253 a year, to students with disabilities. Speech therapy is named on the approved list. One big catch: every dollar flows through one platform. Here is the whole picture.

LA GATOR is Louisiana's education savings account: state money in an account you point at approved costs. The award tiers matter, because students with disabilities get the top tier, up to $15,253 a year at last check.
The good part: Louisiana names speech-language therapy on its approved list. No vague wording. The catch: all spending goes through the Odyssey platform to providers on that platform. You cannot pay a therapist yourself and get paid back. So your therapist must be in the system before the money can reach them.

Worth Applying If
Your child has a documented disability, your family uses or is open to nonpublic schooling, and your speech therapist is on Odyssey or willing to join it. At $15,253 a year, the top tier can carry school costs and a serious therapy schedule.
If Medicaid-Covered Therapy Is the Bigger Need
Louisiana's Act 421 below gets a child with a qualifying disability full Medicaid, no matter what parents earn. Medicaid then covers the speech therapy your child medically needs, with no yearly cap. Many families hold both: Act 421 for medical therapy, GATOR for education. If you can only do one application this month, Act 421 usually moves more money.
How to Apply
Apply through the Louisiana Department of Education.
Applications run in yearly windows. Make your child's disability paperwork clear and complete; it is what gets you the top award tier.
Get your paperwork together.
Evaluations, diagnoses, IEP records. A current speech evaluation helps here and with every other program on this page.
Check Odyssey for your providers, early.
There is no pay-yourself-and-get-paid-back option. If your therapist is not on the platform, the account cannot pay them. Check before you count on a specific practice, and ask your therapist to join if they are missing.
Plan the year's spending. Therapy first.
Tuition, curriculum, and therapy all come from the same account. Map the year's therapy schedule first, then fit other costs around it. Do not let tuition eat the therapy budget by March.
The platform-only rule is the trap: pay an outside provider expecting to be paid back, and that money is simply gone as far as the program is concerned. Confirm your therapist is on Odyssey before the first session.

Is speech therapy really approved?
Yes, by name. Louisiana's list includes speech-language and hearing therapies. That is stronger wording than many states use.
Can I pay my therapist and get paid back?
No. This is the program's sharpest edge. All money flows through the Odyssey platform to providers on it. Off-platform, the account cannot pay them.
Can we have GATOR and Act 421 Medicaid at the same time?
Yes. They are separate programs with separate doors. Act 421 brings Medicaid for medical therapy; GATOR funds education and extra services. Neither blocks the other.
Does my child have to leave public school?
GATOR is built for students outside full-time public school. Check the current enrollment rules with the Department of Education before changing your child's school around the scholarship.
